How to refinish a dining room set

We came about this project during our road trip. We were able to pick this beauty up from some family members who had recently made a move themselves and were glad to take on this solid piece of family memorabilia. Not to mention we needed an upgrade!

Preparation:

First, gather the tools and parts you will need for this projects and decide where you want to do each part.

Step 1 (Back to the basics):

We recommend starting with 40-60 grit sand paper especially if you have layers of old finish or paint you need to get off. Sand all the old material off leaving your wood nice and refreshed and ready to be stained or primed (if needed). After using the low grit sand paper, go back over it with a higher grit gradually working your way up to 120 or higher leaving a smoother surface and closing the pores.

Step 2 (Replace):

Replace any pieces which lack integrity (if needed). This is also a great time to decide if you want to replace old hardware on the set like handles, screws, or other items.

Step 3 (Prime):

Apply a primer base to help protect your wood and ensure your paint will stay. Once the primer is applied and dry, lightly sand over the primed surface in preparation for the paint.

Step 4 (Paint and/or stain):

Apply your base paint or start your staining process. Stained surfaces should not be primed first but rather sanded to the base layer free from all previously applied substances.

Step 5 (Reapply paint or stain to desired coverage):

Sand between layers to help additional layers stay and continue to apply paint and/or stain until you have reached your desired coverage and color.

Step 6 (Protection):

You can apply a protective coating at this time depending on what type of use the item is going to get. Is this just a nice thing to look at for the memories, or are the little ones going to beat it up? You can apply protective coats like polyurethane to help keep it safe and in better shape for longer.

Step 7 (Enjoy!):

Cook some dinner and enjoy this fresh new dining set!
